On the trail leading to Bezdiven Peak (1140 m) starting from the starting point of the route (starting from the old water pumps in Nenkovo village), we reach Hayrenlar, the abandoned village of S. Nenkovo, where stopping to enjoy the spectacular view of the surrounding hills and valleys, and the peace and quiet of nature, in the distance, looking to the east, to the not far away (which is 600 m away, located and about 250 m above the sanctuary Kalpak kayarock massif, we could find one of the mystical, mysterious and interesting stone faces (with their eyes directed in the direction of the sunrise), which are seen in many places in Bulgaria, but as if in the Rhodope Mountains, their images carry a magic, something divine. And looking at them, we have a lot of questions, how did they appear, what is their symbolism, do they depict a particular deity, do they contemplate the infinity of the sky, what is the emotion they express, to unravel this and the answers to these questions, perhaps we need to rely on our own imagination, our own emotion, state of mind and soul, with what eyes we look... The manner of their occurrence cannot be quite clear (nor has it been studied in detail), but we suppose there is no need to, that is after all their beauty and mystique. But according to some, they were created by the elements of nature, according to others, for the purpose of being sculpted to strengthen the common man's relationship with the gods (nature), endowing the stone with many secrets, faith, making it sacred, sacred - a shrine, a kind of grand monument to the faith and cult of the sky and the gods of an unscriptural people.

Reaching, by the beautiful forest path, the foot of the rock massif, facing it, facing south, we have only to shift our gaze slightly to the left, low down, from the high cliff, to notice that it holds the secret not only of the mysterious face, which, whether Mother Nature has sculptured, or whether the hand of man has also intervened, at the base of the rock massif is hidden the entrance to the cave. Even stepping in front of its entrance we are enchanted by what our eyes see, for we realize that we are standing in front of a small cave that reminds us strongly of the famous Womb Cave located nearby, about 1.5 km, in a straight line, on the opposite hill, on the left bank of the r. Blueberry, in the locality of Tangardak kaya ). Its entrance (from the northeast) is quite high, about 5 m, but it is partially blocked by a large piece of rock that probably broke off hundreds of years ago, as a result of natural climatic and natural processes of weathering and erosion of rock, therefore, its approximate length of about 34 m is shortened to about 26 m (with a natural slope of 10-15 degrees, and it is itself partially filled with earth and broken off small and larger pieces of rock and the level on which we are stepping is not actually its floor). As at the bottom of it, against the slight dusk in it, a glimmer of light can be seen, where there is another small, narrow opening, figuratively speaking an entrance, a second one (south-west-top, probably formed by the flowing water and perhaps shaped deliberately by human hand), a reduced copy of the main one to the cave, measuring about 0.70/0.40 m, unlike the one officially recorded and published (in 2001. ) Utroba cave in Tangardak Kaya, where the carved altar (about 1.30 m high) - symbolizing the uterus - can be seen at the bottom, reached by an almost perfectly shaped sunbeam (symbolizing a phallus), but only at certain times of the year, when the sun is low in the north, it could be long enough to symbolically fertilize the womb (estimated to be the months of January-February), an action which embodies the sacred relationship between the rock and the

the sun, the rebirth of life. Which is what distinguishes it from the classical type of womb-caves, but we could not help but notice, when we look at the whole cave, also the similarities, such as the crack, although more roughly shaped, running through the whole upper part (ceiling) of the cave, its overall shape of a female womb, the walls that give the feeling that this is not only the work of nature, but also of a human hand that shaped it to the form we see it today. And as we begin to study the walls of the cave more carefully, we also notice the many small, in most cases circular, of different sizes, but also of a more varied shape, niches, which we also could not say for sure whether they are the work of the continuous flow of water and natural processes, which have been in the cave for a long time, or whether they have been shaped deliberately. There is no way to be sure, without more detailed research by specialists, that we have accidentally stumbled upon a new, in the region of the Eastern Rhodopes, cave of the "wombs" type, but we have certainly discovered another, of the many hidden treasures, of this magical region, of natural and historical wonders, of amazing nature and of wonderful, kind and warm people.

But standing in it feels amazing, slightly strange, mystical, profound, brings mixed feelings, an embodiment of the power of nature, but also of human beliefs since antiquity, their sacred relationship with nature, the cult of power, of the sky, the sun, the Mother Goddess, death, rebirth (like nature itself), happening the cave-shrine located in the mountain bowels

Материалът Пещера Светилище и едно от Каменните лица в Родопите е публикуван за пръв път на Visit Kardzhali.

If you are looking for a place where nature speaks with the voices of silence and falling water, the route to the waterfall of Bezvodno will enchant you. It is located in the heart of the Eastern Rhodopes, near the picturesque village of Bezvodno, about an hour's drive from Kardzhali.

The road to the village itself passes by the majestic Borovitsa Reservoir - the source of the town's drinking water, which creates a sense of tranquility and scale even before the start of the walking route.

Leave your car in the centre of the village, next to the old stone fountain - this is where the adventure begins. The route to the waterfall is about 3 kilometers and takes approximately one hour walking. The trail is suitable for both adults and children (as long as they have appropriate shoes and poles) - an ideal family route for a weekend in nature.

The same trail also marks the beginning of the ascent to Chilyaka Peak (1,459 m) – the highest point in the area. Those heading for the summit can make a short detour of about 400–500 meters to catch a glimpse of the waterfall in its full spring power.

The waterfall of Bezvodno is seasonal - it is most beautiful in spring, when the snow waters from the mountains fill the troughs and turn it into a real spectacle. With its height of about 28 meters, it is one of the highest and most picturesque waterfalls in the region of Kardzhali. Its flow cascades down the rocks and brings a sense of movement and life to the peaceful landscape of the mountain. The same path begins the climb to Chilyaka Peak (1459 m) - the highest point in the region. Those aiming for the top can take a short detour of about 400-500 metres to catch a glimpse of the waterfall in its full spring force.Leave your car in the centre of the village, by the old stone fountain - this is where the adventure begins. The route to the waterfall is about 3 kilometers and takes approximately one hour of walking. The trail is suitable for both adults and children (as long as they have appropriate shoes and poles) - an ideal family route for a weekend in nature.

This is a route that combines ease, accessibility and total immersion in the magic of Rhodope nature - the kind of experience that reminds us how easy it is to find happiness in the simple but magnificent things

Thracian partridge, and the Red-breasted flycatcher. Yumruk Skala is part of the "Natura 2000"
network of protected areas, ensuring the preservation of its biological diversity.

Wealth of the plant world
The vegetation in Yumruk Skala combines various types of plant communities, including
xerothermic oak forests and dry grasslands. Here, you can find unique plants such as succulents,
carnations, and rockroses, which provide ideal habitats for various animal species. This plant
diversity contributes to the overall ecological balance of the area and supports local wildlife.

Navigating the Area
It is important to note that Yumruk Skala does not have marked trails, which may pose
difficulties for inexperienced tourists when navigating. However, visitors can use small stone
pyramids as natural landmarks to guide their way. The main route starts from the village of
Gnyazdovo, offering picturesque views of the protected area. It is recommended that tourists
come well-prepared with proper equipment to fully enjoy the natural beauty of the site.

About 4–5 kilometers from the town of Kardzhali, near the village of Zimzelen, the beautiful phenomenon known as the Kamennata svatba (the “Stone Wedding” or the “Petrified Wedding”) tells its legend. This natural wonder consists of rock formations and a collection of diverse stone figures and shapes, resembling a wedding celebration.
The figures vary in size and are colored in different shades of white, pale pink, and light green, which is attributed to the different minerals within them. Their height ranges from 0.5 to over 10 meters. This natural landmark spans an area of 5 hectares and represents a complex of volcanic tuffs with a rhyolite composition, estimated to be around 35–40 million years old.
Legends about the natural landmark are numerous. One of them tells a lovely yet sorrowful story—about the love of two newlyweds and their wedding, forever frozen in the foothills of the Rhodope Mountains.
A young man fell in love with a girl from the neighboring village. The boy’s father, finding out about his son’s longing, paid a bride price for the girl. Then the young couple got married, and a grand wedding celebration was held with many guests. Leading the procession was the gorgeous bride, her face covered with a veil, followed by her father-in-law.
As the procession made its way solemnly, a strong wind began to blow. The wind lifted the bride's veil, and at that moment, the father-in-law caught sight of her otherworldly beauty, and impure thoughts crossed his mind. Instantly, the wind howled furiously and turned the bride, the father-in-law, and all the wedding guests to stone.
Only the young groom remained, heartbroken and in tears. He pleaded with the wind to turn him to stone as well. The wind granted his request, and he was petrified, with a small lake forming beside him from his tears. The young man's grandmother, who had been watching from the trees in the nearby forest, also asked the wind to turn her into stone. The wind fulfilled her wish, transforming her into a majestic rock.
The site was declared a protected area in 1974. Visiting Kamennata svatba is possible year-round. The route is relatively easy and accessible for visitors. Nearby, another natural phenomenon can be found—Kamennite gabi (the “Stone Mushrooms" ) near the village of Beli Plast.

The meanders of the Arda River and the Kardzhali Dam are a must-see tourist
destination when visiting the Eastern Rhodopes. Their beauty has attracted
photographers and travelers for years, and there are certainly plenty of reasons for
this. The views you can see there are amazing and the road itself provides
interesting and scenic experiences. These unique bends of the river are the result of
the pronounced mountainous character of the Arda River.

One of the most famous and probably the most beautiful meanders is located
between the villages of Star Chitak and Ribartsi and is called the "Bend" or the
"Horseshoe" of the Kardzhali Dam, due to its U-shaped form created by the river.
This meander is the result of the confluence of different tributaries in the dam. On
one side, the Arda River flows in, joining several kilometers upstream, while on the
other side is the Berkovitsa River. An interesting fact is that on the rocky peninsula
opposite, you can find the remains of the “Patmos” fortress.

How to get to “Zavoya”?

On the Ardino–Kardzhali road, take the turn-off for the village of Borovitsa. When you
reach the village, you will see a fork. Turn right towards the villages of Star Chitak,
Ribartsi, and Suhovo.

Shortly before arriving , you will begin to see the dam. There is
a road extension on site where you can park your car. After 2 minutes, one of the
most unique sights in Bulgaria will appear in front of you.

Материалът Меандър „Завоя“ на язовир Кърджали е публикуван за пръв път на Visit Kardzhali.

On the road from Kardzhali to Haskovo, on the left side of the highway, near the village of
Beli Plast, you will find a captivating natural composition – the Stone Mushrooms, one of the
biggest attractions in this region. These formations reach heights of up to 2.5 meters and have
various shapes depending on the light , changing their hues from pink and greenish to
dazzling white .

Their stalks are delicate and susceptible to erosion, while the caps are solid, made from
volcanic glass.

Like many such places there are many legends told about it .

Legend of the Brave Daughters of Raduyl

According to this tale, the mushrooms are the petrified bodies of the four daughters of the
coal miner Raduyl. One day, while the girls were gone fetching water they were pursued by a
group of bandits. The girls frightened the horse of the gang leader, causing him to fall and be
killed, after which they hid into a nearby forest. However, one of the bandits caught up with
them swinging his saber, struck off the head of the first girl. As soon as her head touched the
ground, she turned into a stone mushroom. The same fate befell her sisters. The attacker
attempted to escape, but with his first step, he turned into a black rock. To this day, people
refer to the lonely, ugly boulder near the mushrooms as Kаратепе – Karatepe (the Black
Hill).

The Stone Mushrooms were declared a natural landmark many years ago, and the area is
home to rare birds such as the rock bunting and the Egyptian vulture.

Материалът Природен феномен „Каменните гъби“ е публикуван за пръв път на Visit Kardzhali.

In the Eastern Rhodopes, west of the town of Kardzhali, lies the beautiful eco trail "Raiski Izgled," offering visitors a one-hour hike to a breathtaking viewpoint. From there, stunning views unfold over the Kardzhali Reservoir, showcasing its picturesque water meanders.

A summer visit promises a refreshing experience amidst lush green landscapes, but it's advisable to bring enough water, especially on hot days. The route itself is not particularly challenging and is suitable for children, though certain sections are steep and slippery. The path takes you through enchanting scenery and culminates in a spectacular view over the reservoir. After reaching the final point, if you wish to visit the

Route

The starting point of the “Raiski izgled” eco trail is approximately 1.5 kilometers west of the village of Padartsi in the Kardzhali region. Access to the village is via a well-maintained asphalt road with several sharp turns. Once you pass through the village heading west, you will encounter a few bends — the first turning left, the second turning right. At this right-hand bend, you will find a convenient parking area. Facing north from there, you will see a narrow path marking the trail’s beginning.

Follow this path, which is clearly marked in red, and without any significant forks, making it hard to lose your way. The trail’s total length is around 1.6 kilometers, with an elevation gain of just over 200 meters. Despite its relative brevity, the initial section is steep, requiring approximately one hour of uphill walking. At the trail’s end, your efforts will be rewarded with several comfortable benches and an unparalleled view of the Kardzhali Reservoir.

From Kardzhali, the easiest way to get there is via the Kardzhali – Ardino – Smolyan road, and the Cascade is located 13 km from the town of Ardino. The road is extremely picturesquе, but drive carefully, because there are many bends and in places there are narrowings, but drive carefully as the curves are quite frequent, and there are some narrow sections. After passing Ardino, keep an eye on the right side, as the Cascade is visible from the road. There is a turn-off where you can park your car and walk down to the cascade. Don’t miss the opportunity to take photos from above. To access the facility, you will need to cross a rope bridge, which is another interesting addition to the route. The highest water flow occurs during the spring months when the snow melts, and that’s when the location is at its most picturesque.
