The Womb Cave is located in the rocky area of Tangardak Kaya, high in the mountains above the Borovitsa hut, about 20 km away from the town of Kardzhali.
Near the cave lies one of the largest complexes of rock Thracian niches in the Eastern Rhodopes.
Interestingly, scientists have found that the cavity was originally a karst formation, only 16 meters deep. However, human intervention has transformed and carved it into the shape of a female womb, with water constantly flowing down its walls.
Inside, at the southern end of the cave, there is a carved altar symbolizing the womb. The opening is 3 meters high and about 2.5 meters wide, allowing light to enter.
The entire structure literally resembles a female reproductive organ and aligns with the notes of Thracologist Professor Alexander Fol regarding womb-like caves. Notably, at noon, a beam of sunlight penetrates through a cut opening in the ceiling and projects onto the floor, forming a perfectly outlined solar phallus that enlarges and points towards the womb altar.
This unique natural spectacle occurs only during specific months of the year when the sun is low in the north—especially in January and February. This event combines symbolism and natural phenomena.
The cave serves as a kind of window into the ancient rituals of the people who inhabited the Sacred Rhodope Mountains, and perhaps its purpose was to receive only those initiated into the mysticism and secrets of the mountain.
