These formations reach heights of up to 2.5 meters and have various shapes depending on the light , changing their hues from pink and greenish to dazzling white .
Their stalks are delicate and susceptible to erosion, while the caps are solid, made from volcanic glass.
Like many such places there are many legends told about it .
Legend of the Brave Daughters of Raduyl
According to this tale, the mushrooms are the petrified bodies of the four daughters of the coal miner Raduyl. One day, while the girls were gone fetching water they were pursued by a group of bandits. The girls frightened the horse of the gang leader, causing him to fall and be killed, after which they hid into a nearby forest. However, one of the bandits caught up with them swinging his saber, struck off the head of the first girl. As soon as her head touched the ground, she turned into a stone mushroom. The same fate befell her sisters. The attacker attempted to escape, but with his first step, he turned into a black rock. To this day, people refer to the lonely, ugly boulder near the mushrooms as Kаратепе – Karatepe (the Black Hill).
The Stone Mushrooms were declared a natural landmark many years ago, and the area is home to rare birds such as the rock bunting and the Egyptian vulture.
