The Statue of Orpheus

At the very entrance of the town of Kardzhali, at the entrance from the towns of Haskovo and Plovdiv, before the turn-off for the village of Kalinka, on the right, a 6-meter high brass statue of Orpheus, the ancient Greek mythical Thracian singer, who is the symbol of the Eastern Rhodopes and the town of Kardzhali, and according to legends and myths he was born, lived and worked here. Before it was placed at the entrance to the town of. After an attempt to steal the monument was disfigured and the idea was born to move it to a prominent and protected place. After the restoration of the statue, it was placed in its place, at the northern entrance of the town of Kardzhali, in June, 2005. The figure of Orpheus itself was sculpted in the 1970s by the renowned Bulgarian sculptor Krum Damyanov. Around the monument there is a specially built plaza, with pine trees planted and stairs for easier access to it. At night the statue is illuminated and the view is even more impressive. And for almost ten years now, the figure of Orpheus in Kardzhali has been tirelessly welcoming and sending off visitors to the city.
