Rock cult complex

At the northeastern foothills of Perperikon lies a rock-cut cult complex with numerous carvings and so-called sharapani.

These are stone installations used for processing grapes and producing wine.

The complex likely originated as early as the Bronze Age and is associated with the cult of the god Dionysus.

For the Thracians, wine was not merely a drink but a sacred symbol connected to the deity and the cycle of death and rebirth.
