The Regional History Museum in Kardzhali, established in 1965, is one of the largest museums in Southern Bulgaria, dedicated to preserving the region's cultural and historical heritage. Its main collection includes over 40,000 cultural artifacts related to the history and nature of the Eastern Rhodopes. The museum is housed in one of Kardzhali's most beautiful and impressive buildings, situated in a picturesque park spanning 15 acres. The park features water basins and 22 plant species unique to Southern Bulgaria. In 2005, the museum building was declared an architectural monument of national importance due to its historical and architectural significance, reflecting the legacy of a bygone era. Construction of the building began in the early 1920s based on a design by Russian architect Pomerantsev. Initially funded through donations, only the foundations were laid in 1922. With additional financing from the City Municipality, construction resumed and continued until 1930, adhering to the original architectural vision. The building was initially intended to serve as a "madrasah" (a spiritual Muslim school), but this purpose was never realized. During the 1940s, it was repurposed for military needs during World War II and later temporarily housed students from the "St. St. Cyril and Methodius" primary school. In 1978, the adaptation of the building for museum purposes began under the guidance of architect Elena Kondeva. The museum's exhibition officially opened to visitors in May 1987

The museum spans an area of 1,800 square meters, organized across three floors with 30 exhibition halls that showcase artifacts tracing life in the Eastern Rhodopes from ancient times to the early 20th century. The exhibits are divided thematically into three departments: "Archaeology," "Ethnography," and "Nature."

The "Archaeology" department is located on the first floor, featuring 8 halls with a total exhibition area of 600 square meters. It houses archaeological finds and artifacts that trace the lives of people in the Eastern Rhodopes from the 6th millennium BCE (Neolithic period) to the late Bulgarian Middle Ages.

The "Ethnography" department is located on the third floor and includes 11 halls that illustrate the folk culture, customs, and livelihoods typical of the population of the Eastern Rhodope region from the late 19th to the early 20th century.

The "Nature" department, located on the second floor, has 4 halls with a total exhibition area of 300 square meters. It highlights the remarkable nature of the Eastern Rhodopes, with rooms dedicated to "Botany," "Paleontology," "Metallic and Non-metallic Minerals. Crystallography," and "Mineralogy."

And last but certainly not least, the "Kardzhali – The City" exhibit, also located on the second floor, consists of 4 halls that tell the story of Kardzhali from its liberation in 1912 through the 1940s, showing its transformation into a modern city.

Additionally, the museum includes the Stanka Dimitrova Art Gallery, housed in a former konak (Ottoman administrative building).

The museum building and its exhibitions are accessible to people with disabilities.
