]]> The Municipal Center for Culture and Youth Activities in Kardzhali has been a home to traditions, music, dance, and the preservation of Bulgarian roots in the city and the region for more than 70 years. The House of Culture is a place where the beauty of folklore has been conveyed and presented to audiences over the years through various formations. Numerous people have participated in the folklore ensemble, performing traditional dances dressed in beautiful folk costumes. It is the city’s landmark for preserving the beauty of traditions and folklore, inspiring with the history created by all those who have been part of the House of Culture’s creative activities over time.
One of the first major enterprises in Kardzhali and the Eastern Rhodopes was the Bulgarian-Soviet mining company “Gorubso.” In the early 1950s, a House of Culture for workers in the mining industry was established under its auspices. In October 1952, the new building of the House of Culture was inaugurated, which at the time was the most impressive building in Kardzhali.
In its early years, the House of Culture was managed by temporary administrators, with a director appointed by Gorubso’s general directorate or later by the Regional People’s Council. The first director, from October 24, 1952, was Dimitar Yosifov Chernopiyski, an artist by profession who worked for many years at the “Komsomolets” factory. Over time, the activities of amateur artists expanded, and the House of Culture evolved into a center for all citizens of Kardzhali. At one point, it was also referred to as the Regional House of Culture. Its activities were initially funded by “Gorubso” and later by the Regional People’s Council, but as it grew into a city-wide cultural center, it began receiving support from the municipality as well. Directors of the House of Culture included Zlatka Garipova (from 1953), followed by Hristo Botusharov and Krastyu Bekirski. On September 11, 1959, Olga Kiryakova took over the position for more than 20 years, followed by Marin Vladinov, Tamara Dimitrova, Vasil Vasilev, and the current director, Mariana Likova. The development of creative activities at the House of Culture began with the establishment of a Music and Dance Ensemble in 1952 by its founder and long-time leader Todor Momchilov. Over the years, the ensemble has performed thousands of concerts and participated in international festivals and tours in countries like Russia, Turkey, Greece, the Czech Republic, Finland, Italy, Algeria, Morocco, the USA, South Korea, Poland, Slovenia, Lithuania, and others.
In 1954, by decision of the Regional People’s Council of Kardzhali, an Arts School was established. Instruments were purchased, and qualified musicians were appointed as teachers. Many professional musicians started their careers here, including Professor Atanas Slavchev (recently the rector of the Academy of Music, Dance, and Fine Arts in Plovdiv), Professor Petya Bagovska, Professor Tanya Brangova, Radost Popova, Ivo Papazov (Ibrahim), Neshko Neshev, and others who have brought fame to Kardzhali and Bulgaria. In 1971, a folk orchestra was established to accompany the folklore dance ensemble, with its first conductor being Dimitar Kolev. The last leader of the orchestra was the popular accordionist Neshko Neshev. The orchestra includes instruments such as the kaval, clarinet, accordion, keyboard, tupan, and bagpipe.
Today, the Municipal Center for Culture and Youth Activities remains an attractive cultural hub for people of all ages. It provides opportunities to develop talent in acting, dancing, music, and singing. The specialties offered at the School of Music and Dance Arts include Piano, Violin, Guitar, Accordion, Bagpipe, Folk Singing, Pop and Jazz Singing, Bulgarian Folk Dances (Preparatory Group), Modern
Ballet (Preparatory Group), Representative Music and Dance Ensemble “Orpheus,” Children’s Dance Ensemble “Orpheiche” Dance Club “First on the Dance Floor,” Musical Theater, Drama Studio, and Ballet.
In February 2024, the building of the House of Culture in Kardzhali was illuminated in purple as part of the municipality’s participation in the initiative of the Association of Parents of Children with Epilepsy. This marked International Epilepsy Day, observed on February 12 this year. On this day, iconic buildings in cities around the world are lit in purple.

]]> The Contemporary Art Gallery, managed by the "Art Movement Circle" Foundation since 2002, is located at 3 Trakia Blvd. The team maintains a rich cultural calendar and a variety of cultural programs with the active participation of young artists from the city, region, country, and abroad. The wealth of local and international talents presented is supported by the experience of Art Movement "Circle" in working within open and unconventional spaces, as well as in developing new art zones, such as the cause of the Art House in Dzhadovnica, created by the team, located in the center of the village. Artists from 33 countries have worked on their projects there. In addition to exhibitions and presentations, Art Gallery "Circle" offers courses in visual arts, photography, and creative writing. They develop new art practices and models, as well as new forms of communication, including through specialized art publications that feature young authors. All of this broadens the perspective and understanding of contemporary trends in culture and cultural industries in Bulgaria, the Balkans, and Europe. In addition to professional artists, it is a traditional practice for the gallery to host exhibitions by students from various universities in the country and abroad, studying graphic design, sculpture, ceramics, and architecture. Some of the events are held to support different causes. In addition to presentations by authors from Bulgaria and abroad, the gallery also showcases works created during various editions of the International Plein Air "Art Horizons" in Dzhadovnica, which is part of different European and international networks for contemporary arts. The gallery also created a visual arts class for children and serves as a youth cultural center, organizing debates, multimedia screenings, and literary performances. It also acts as an information center for upcoming cultural events, with many activities in the Art Gallery being implemented in partnership with the Municipality of Kardzhali. Art Gallery "Circle" has a collection of works by contemporary Bulgarian and foreign authors, with over 300 pieces. A large part of them have been donated by artists who participated in the International Plein Air "Art Horizons," which has been held in Dzhadovnica since 2005. Art Movement "Circle" works with partner organizations for culture, art, and youth activities from across Europe, North Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Japan, the USA, Brazil, and others, presenting its artistic concepts and authors at exhibitions abroad – the Netherlands (2002), Macedonia (2005), Italy (2008, 2010), the United Kingdom (2009, 2018), Spain (2010, 2016), Turkey (2010, 2011, 2014, 2019), Belgium (2018), the USA (2019).

]]> In one of the oldest and most beautiful buildings in Kardzhali, an architectural and cultural monument of local significance, treasures of Bulgarian fine art are preserved. The gallery features valuable works by great Bulgarian classical artists as well as contemporary Bulgarian authors.


The beautiful art gallery in the city of Kardzhali is named after one of the notable artists of the last century. In 1967, she joined the art department of the Regional History Museum in the city, transforming the department into the then Regional Gallery, of which she became curator and director.
She herself participated in national art exhibitions, later holding solo exhibitions in Kardzhali and Sofia. She has been a member of the Union of Bulgarian Artists since 1972, and later the chairman of the artists in Kardzhali, she is an honorary citizen of the city, and she also completed her life's journey here in 1996, on November 28. Her paintings are exhibited in galleries in Kardzhali, Smolyan, Sofia and other cities across Bulgaria.
Art Department "Stanka Dimitrova" in the city Kardzhali was founded in 1960, together with the museum in the city and opened in 1961 as a branch of the National Art Gallery, in 1967 it was established as an independent institution and a leading cultural institute in Southern Bulgaria.
The gallery is housed in an old administrative building, declared a cultural monument, built in the mid-19th century as a Turkish konak. In the early 20th century it was used for the needs of the army, police and state administration. Part of its structure has been preserved in its authentic form to this day.
The Stanka Dimitrova Gallery is the third richest art gallery in the country, with a collection of over 3,200 works of fine art from different periods of Bulgarian culture - paintings, graphics, sculptures, icons and Renaissance prints.
The gallery is located on three levels, with three different, thematic expositions.

Level 1: Contemporary Bulgarian Art Works by contemporary Bulgarian artists are presented. The exhibition showcases an impressive collection of paintings and sculptures from the 1980s and 1990s. Many of the artists have received international and national awards and have held numerous exhibitions in Bulgaria and many other countries around the world. Among the artists featured in this impactful display of painting, monumental sculpture, and small bronze works are: Emil Stoychev, Georgi Bozhilov, Hristo Simeonov, Vasilka Moneva, Volodya Kenarev, Nikolay Karadjov, Encho Pironkov, Lika Yanko, Vezhdi Rashidov, Emil Popov, Pavel Koichev, Ziyatin Nuriyev, and others.


On Level 2 are displayed valuable works by major Bulgarian classical artists, donated from the collection of the National Art Gallery in the 1960s. The exhibition is titled “Old Masters” and can be said to leave a vivid impression on the mind and heart of every visitor with its emotional impact. The paintings date from the late 19th century to the 1960s. Their creators are among the most iconic figures in Bulgarian fine art: Anton Mitov, Ivan Mrkvička (“Portrait of Tsar Ferdinand”), Jaroslav Věšín, Dimitar Gyudzhenov, Nikola Mihaylov, Stefan Ivanov, Elena Karamihailova, Sirak Skitnik, Ivan Penkov, Vladimir Dimitrov – The Master (with four of his works), Bencho Obreshkov, Iliya Petrov, Bocho Donev, Dimitar Kazakov, Genko Genkov, Stoyan Venev, Dechko Uzunov, Vasil Zahariev, Konstantin Shtarkelov, Vera Nedkova, and others. This makes the exhibition one of the treasures of Bulgaria’s cultural heritage.

(The Crypt): Icon Collection The gallery’s crypt features a precious collection of around 200 icons, dating from the Late Middle Ages to the Bulgarian Revival period (17th to early 20th century), as well as Revival-era prints. The icons were acquired during rescue missions in the late 1960s and 1970s from deteriorating and abandoned churches in the Eastern Rhodopes. The exhibition begins with priceless 17th-century icons and concludes with works from the early 20th century. Most iconographers were of Greek origin, and nearly all inscriptions on the icons are in Greek.
The Stanka Dimitrova Art Gallery has been operating since 1967 and until 1999 it existed as an independent cultural institute within the municipality, and in 2015 it again passed under the tutelage of the Regional Historical Museum of Kardzhali.

]]> On the southern bank of the Arda River, in the Veselechane quarter of Kardzhali, lies the medieval monastery of St. John the Baptist. It opened its doors in 2000, after several decades of excavation. In the 1930s, local archaeologists first stumbled upon the remains of the monastery, and later in 1962, during construction activities, more parts of the complex were uncovered. Official archaeological excavations began only in the 1980s.
The discoveries revealed that these were the structures of an extensive monastic complex, surrounded by fortress walls. At the heart of the complex are the walls of a church, adorned with exceptional frescoes, some of which reach sizes of up to 3.5 meters in certain sections. Archaeologists suggest that this was an episcopal monastery established in the 13th century.

]]> The House-Museum of Naim Süleymanoğlu is located in the heart of Momchilgrad and preserves the story of a man the world knows as the “Pocket Hercules,”remembered by generations as a symbol of extraordinary talent and personal courage.

Although he was born in the village of Ptichar, Naim moved with his family to Momchilgrad at the age of ten - the town that would later become the guardian of his memory. Today, the museum exhibition is arranged in this very house.

What will you see in the museum?

On the first floor, visitors encounter the human side of the champion — personal belongings, as well as reconstructions of his room in Ptichar and his home in Momchilgrad. The second floor is dedicated to the sports legend: the very first barbell he trained with, dozens of medals, trophies, and photographs from his greatest triumphs on world podiums.

Who is Naim?

In 1998, the International Weightlifting Federation named him Weightlifter No. 1 of the 20th century. Over the course of his career, he became:

  • a three-time Olympic champion
  • a seven-time world champion and seven-time European champion
  • the holder of 46 world records

Due to his height of just 1.47 meters, he earned the nickname “Pocket Hercules,” yet his strength far exceeded physical dimensions.

From sporting peak to moral choice

Naim’s life was not defined by medals alone. He also became a victim of the so-called “Revival Process” - a period during which Bulgarian Turks were forced to change their names. Naim refused. This decision changed his fate - leading to escape, tension, and a new beginning. Competing under the Turkish flag, he once again conquered Olympic heights, securing his place forever in the history of world sport.

A living memory

Naim Süleymanoğlu passed away on November 18, 2017, at the age of just 50. In 2019, a monument was unveiled in Momchilgrad bearing the inscription:
“Champion of all times, who brought glory to Bulgaria and Turkey.”

The house-museum tells a story of talent, identity, and the courage to remain true to oneself - even when the price is high. It is a place well worth visiting, so that this remarkable history may be remembered.
