Palace-sanctuary

As early as the Bronze Age, a large cult center with temple and residential buildings was formed around the Temple of Dionysus, known as the Palace-Sanctuary of Perperikon.

During the Roman period, the complex underwent significant reconstructions. Access through the rock passage was cut off, and the entrance was moved to the western fortress gate.

The fortress walls were over 2 meters thick and built using the characteristic Thracian dry-stone masonry.

Through the western gate, one reaches the southern entrance of the palace, which leads to an inner courtyard. In the northern part of the courtyard, a rock-carved throne can be seen. It is believed that the building had three or four storeys, as evidenced by the preserved niches for the wooden beams of the structure.
